After taking a long Sebatical from blogging, I realize now, more than ever, that ever since I have given up writing, something that I LOVE, I have been less than satisfied in my work at home journey. I was given a 62 page book of companies that hire people to work at home as employees or Independent Contractors, freelance opportunities and just other legitimate ways to make money. A lot of companies are not in my area of expertise like skip tracers, accountants amongst others, but with the unemployment rate at 8.5% in March I figured I would work through these links as fast as I could. I have found several dead links and I do like to do a little bit of research on them before I post them.

I will add these to the links on the side of this blog as well and individual posts so please subscribe to our feeds if you want to be updated on additions as they come out.

In the state of the economy and my personal layoffs I experienced in the last 12 months I truly believe that you need several multiple streams of income to be prepared for anything that may happen, because in many cases, if you work for a company online (just like in a regular brick and mortar business) you will get no notice if you are going to be laid off. Right now my 2 main sources of income are LiveOps and ASP, I also work FT for a 3^rd company at home that I just started a week ago as an employee. I have been working at home since 1992 and will never work outside the home again. This gives me the chance to home school my son and be more in charge of my financial life.

Call center J.O.B.S. in newspapers - DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

I decided to do some research and to prove to myself that getting a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke) outside of the home or working for anyone else for that fact in most cases (in a call center) is a complicated mess!

I decided to take a day job at KB Promotions. Well, first of all ANY ONE can get a job there. If you say yes you want the job you got it in 99.99% of the cases. They tell you you will make $100's even $1000's of dollars a WEEK. Wow too good to be true? It is. First my job was to give away "free" cruises (I use that term VERY lightly!!!!!!!!)The FREE cruise costs over $500 and requires you to have a valid credit card. I lasted 1-1/2 days. Wanna know why? Here is a partial list of reasons why.

Don't sound overly stimulated and excited that the person you are calling just won a FREE cruise to the Bahamas? Guess what! You just got fined $100 because you are being rude!
To work there you have to pay THEM $20 a week.
Don't want to use a handset (Trust me you want a headset) sign this form and we will take $60 out of your first paycheck. (a used one at that!)
If a caller is not interested in the free cruise and they tell you so you have to keep that lead active so I guarantee you that within a few hours they WILL get another "Congrats you just won a FREE Cruise (again) and they will continue to do so until the caller says to take my name off your list. Then pray the agent actually writes your name on the DNC list and when you turn that paper in to whomever that it actually gets acted on.
Your "fines" can be anywhere from $100-$2500.
If a customer does a charge back on their credit card and you were paid commission on that package you have to pay the company back.
They play bee-bop music at dance club levels to make you "Motivated and excited"! 1/2 the time you can not hear the caller on the other end.
You have people in ALL directions SCREAMING (literally!!) at the TOP of their lungs. Bells are ringing, people clapping and running all the time but not many are making sales. Hmmmm.
If you are a "Veteran" there, meaning you been there more than 1 month, you are told by the trainers that they are LOSERS and LAZY?! What?!
Don't make any commissions and you make min wage that week.
You are not an employee but an Independent Contractor BUT you have no rights and are treated as crap.
The sales meetings are full of cursing and very foul language!
I talked to 3 people at my table who have recently been in jail or are on probation. Guess what? These same criminals are taking your credit card information. There are no background checks or drug test. Many people wear sunglasses inside while working.
You get a 15-20 min lunch. Go over, I swear you will be in deep trouble. Did I tell you you have to carry Pooh Bear with you while on break? I kid you not!
You are not paid for time in the sales meetings every day. 30 minutes min.
If you are not speaking loud enough someone will walk behind you and kick your chair hard.
If you yawn you are yelled at and criticised on the call center floor.
They have Power Hours where you HAVE to stand up while on a call. They also raise the volume of the music.
This is just a few of the problems I experienced.

Want to do Customer service work. Do your homework BEFORE applying for call center jobs anywhere. I will be doing more research on this subject.

Thriving during a recession by blogging!

I consider myself very lucky! Despite the recession and being hired for a short term seasonal management position that pays very well that I can do at home, I am still working at home with no layoff in site. So I went out and bought myself a new car! I got a Kia Sedona and I have to say I am loving it! I was able to finance on my own and get the car I wanted and at the price range I wanted. It could not have worked out any better! It was a real good feeling to go to a major dealership and get approved for a car loan! It just shows my hard work at improving my life, credit etc is paying off! Now we can travel without worrying. I even signed up for AAA premium just so I can get discounts. Now the only good/bad thing is I have 3 different road side assistant programs lol.

So, since my car payments are higher I decided to go back to blogging to make extra money. So I did a google search and found so many new links for bloggers to make money! I am testing them out before I post them here just to make sure that they will work out for most who blog.

I am a firm believer that if you have an Internet connection, a computer and a brain, there is no reason why you can not make money at home! Of course a paypal account is also needed for many work at home jobs, especially for blogging payments.

So be on the lookout for some new links under blogging opportunities links. I will also be weeding out the old ones.

How long does it take you get get ready for work in the morning?

I am turning more like my Dad every day lol. I am getting at the age now where it takes me at least 1 hour of doing nothing but having breakfast and coffee before I can start my work for the day. About the only thing I can do first thing in the morning (As long as I have my coffee in hand) is writing. As far as doing any kind of work that involves speaking I am no good for at least one hour.

When I was growing up my Dad had over an hour commute one way and had to be to work early in the morning so he would often get up at 4AM to leave for work at say 6AM. I never really understood that when I was younger as I could eat and be gone out the door for school as soon as my feet hit the ground.

Now that I am 38 years old and a single parent it takes me a whole lot longer to get ready in the morning and my commute is 10 feet lol. Just getting mentally prepared for whatever the day brings is a lot now. I still take my work day as seriously as if I was working in the outside world, I still need to eat, have coffee (Which many times involves getting in my car for a Starbucks run) and take a shower and yes I get dressed and put on Makeup. I was watching Lifetime TV yesterday and there was a commercial for the Chanel movie coming out next month, and there was a scene where Coco Chanel was talking to someone and asking the lady, “How can your brain function wearing that?” I can totally understand where she was coming from because unless I am really sick and I HAVE to get work done and then go back to bed I have to get dressed at bare minimum. I have worked from my laptop in bed on a few occasions, but that is a rare exception. I try and separate my work and home as much as possible.

So what do you do to get ready for your work day when you work at home? I would love to know! Are you the type that can just get out of bed and hop into work or are you like me and need to have some quiet time first? What is your morning routine like?

Well I have to say that it sucks being unemployed. Luckily I do have some freelance work that I do but not having a guaranteed source of income and not to mention the benefits really sucks. I can keep my insurance coverage though COBRA I guess, I just haven’t thought about it.

I am hoping that today or this week I will hear something back on some of the jobs I applied for. One company contacted me to file new hire paper work, I just hope I hear back from them quickly. I am eager to start training and getting some steady work in again.

I keep thinking that I should have done more to promote my blogs to generate more income though Google AdSense. I could spend all day doing the “could have, would have, should have” dance. The sad part is I was assured by my boss that we were all safe and that we would not be losing our jobs. How sad is that?! Then just a month later only about 5 of 42 get to keep their jobs.

I always knew that having a JOB was never really secure, that the only true source of security is owning your own business, and up until the last 2-3 years I have always ran my own home based business. In today’s day in age you always need a backup.

This job loss could not have come at a worst time in my life. It’s the 5th anniversary of my youngest son death, some kid stole my son’s brand new ripboard that I just paid $80+ for, and yesterday I find out that my Grandparents home burnt down for the second time. I looked at the pictures of their home burnt down and I can remember going in the kitchen door and looking for my Grandparents and all the memories that came with it.

Cest la Vie … Life must go on.

Out of a job and benefits

Well I am out of a job. It looks like corporate downsizing has affected me. Today with NO notice I lost my full time job. I now have no medical benefits or guaranteed income. I could see if we were given like 2-4 weeks to find a new job but to be let go or be demoted with a pay cut is a slap in the face. I am scared and really pissed. It just proves to me that the ONLY reliable income is starting your own business, something that I did in the past, but somehow I thought that it would be better to have a J.O.B. I was so wrong.

So as long as depression does not set in you should see some more activity here on my blog. I am hoping that the few hours of crying and sleeping today was enough of a pity party. Afterall I am a single mom and I have a son who depends on me. I am just thankful that I moved to a cheaper apartment when I did.

Anyways, I am off to bed now and will write more. As I find some good work at home links I will post them on my Work At Home Parents Blog

Sorry I have not posted anything in a while. I am in the process of moving into a smaller apartment which is more affordable. I hate moving but this turns out to be a good thing! My son will be in a better school, I will be saving $500+ a month in rent. It’s in a country setting with downtown Tampa just minutes away and the best part of all my Starbucks I visit almost daily is right across the street! The apartment complex I am moving in also serve free Otis Spunkmyer cookies and Barnie’s coffee free to the guest and residents. There are tennis courts, a huge park, pool, tanning deck, gym, Jacuzzi and more.

So if you don’t hear from me in a while its because I am moving all this week. I will resume the weekly radio shows as soon as I am settled in! I will keep you posted!

Test your financial fitness

With the economy the way it is many people are doing all they can do just to keep food on the table, gas in their car(s) and the electric on. Many times we neglect other bills such as credit cards and loans. By not paying credit cards and loans the way we are supposed to it has a detrimental effect on our credit history which can keep us from ever getting ahead.

I took this quiz at Bills IQ to test my overall financial fitness. My overall score was 77% or a C. I have no credit cards at all and pay for whatever I need with cash or I don’t get it. I guess that’s why I was a little shocked when I saw my score. There are some things I can do at work, I could contribute to my 401K but I haven’t, I use the excuse that I can’t afford it. (Yes I work at home and my employer offers a 401K along with medical benefits.)

What I did learn from this test is that I need to better plan for my future. Anyone that has a lot of debt may want to look into how they can Consolidate debt. Doing so will improve your financial fitness!

2008 Work At Home Parents Guide Book

I am working on a book right now for ways to make money at. It is a book that I started in January of this year and have put on the back burner. I went through the whole book again this weekend and every link is still valid, I was really glad to see that!

When reviewing my stats here at Work At Home Parents I found out that my visitors are looking for all kinds of businesses to start, not only home based businesses. So I am going to try and include some various business opportunities and ways to find them. My dream has always been to open an Internet Café but that was years ago and now it seems that most Café’s provide Wi-Fi for FREE or low cost. Maybe one day I will open my café, who knows. So many scams..so much time!

I have to admit I am exhausted. I have been researching making money by completing offers or freebies for cash. So to protect my debit card that I pay bills and etc with I bought a $25 prepaid visa debit card to complete offers with to see if this is really a way to make money. I figured if I use the prepaid card I couldn’t jeopardize my money. So can you make money by completing offers? My answer is both yes and no. Although you can make some money, but you can also lose a lot of money. I compare completing offers like playing the lotto. Sometimes you make money and sometimes you lose.

Many people make money by visiting websites such as Free Lunch Room or Free iPod Guide, etc. They find people who are paying for people to sign up for offers. Sometimes the sites will require you to sign up for a trial that costs only $1 or $2 but if you keep the product or service, then you could be billed $50-$60 a month or more! Sometimes you will order a sample product and just pay shipping which is wonderful but then most all times you are put on an auto-ship program and are paying each month for the full size products. Many times the terms of the offers make it almost impossible to cancel the service.

There are some users who will pay you to sign up with an affiliate marketing link and will pay you a few bucks for doing so via PayPal.

So here are some things I have learned!

• NEVER EVER use your personal credit cards or bank cards to sign up for offers. You are putting your financial health at risk by doing so.
• NEVER complete a “trade” from someone you don’t know or who has not set up an official trade from the website you used to find people who are paying for referrals. Many people will send an IM to you or email if you have it listed on your profile and then state they are willing to pay for referrals. If you get such an IM ask them what site they saw your profile on and then ask them to set up a trade using the trade manager. This protects you both! If they are scam artist (the freebie industry is loaded with fraudsters) you will never hear back from them because they will move on to the next victim. It’s best to not include your email address or IM screen name on your public profile.
• If you are new to this way of making money, start with offers that require no credit card. You will make less money but have nothing to lose.
• Most times you will pay about ½ for what you will earn, so let’s say you are promised $60 to complete some offers, you will have to buy trial memberships, product samples, services that usually cost about ½ of what you will make.
• When looking on Freebie sites for people who pay for offers the only people making real money is the one offering. You can complete your own offers on your own at the same sites they list and make much more money.
• Always use a separate email address just for doing offers! Your email address will be sold and you WILL get lots of email!

My overall opinion of making money using freebies is it is a gamble. Some sites may not credit the offers you do for a number of reasons, even if you spend money on the offer. I personally do not believe in signing up for an offer just to get paid. If you genuinely are interested in the offer you are buying then this is a GREAT way to save money and maybe get a few bucks back in return. I think of it this way, if I was paying a site to advertise my services, I would not want someone who was not interested in what I was selling to sign up only because they were being paid to and then turn around and cancel.

And of course my favorite, you have more time to spend with your family. Since you're your own boss and you can come and go as you please. You can always spend some time with your family. You can do your job on family picnics, vacations, and family affairs. Since you don't need to clock in and out of work you have all the time in the world. You only need to responsibly save some time for your business so you can reap it's benefits.

But don't think it ends there. There are so many other reasons why a home-based job is so fulfilling. You can start your own home-based business now and see for yourself how it can better your life. And remember, how much you give is also how much you will get in return.

Organize your office.

* Go paperless - scan your paper files and place in folders with descriptive names on your computer. Do the same for each new piece of paper you receive.

* Set up your computer files to match your paper files.

* Client files – Folders for each client

* Accounting files – Folders to hold receipts, bills, tax forms, etc

* Administrative files – Folders to keep track of

* Marketing files – Folders to keep copies of all your marketing materials - Web site, business card/flyer/brochure, presentations, etc.

* Put the items you use often within reach.

* Give yourself something nice to look at – family pictures, flowers, and inspirational sayings.

Develop the self-employment mindset

* Make your business something you are passionate about, something you would do even if you didn’t have to.

* Keep track of everything, small advances are very encouraging.

* Start the day dressed for work.

* Let the family know that once you enter your office you are no longer available; you have left for work.

I joined SocialSpark today and was reading some blogs on there and a good question came up. What happens when life gets in the way and you are unable to blog for any length of time? Do you call in one of your favorite blog subscribers who are familiar with your blog? Do you blog from your cell phone? What if you get sick with the flu and can’t even get out of bed or a hurricane hits your town and you are not connected to the outside world for a few days or weeks? How do you prevent all your hard work from going down the drain?

Business Tips for Work-at-Home Moms

Being a work at home mom, typically referred to as a WAHM, means that you have two full time jobs! We all know being a stay at home mom is a full time job in itself, but when you add running a full time or even a part time business to your day it may feel like you are always “on the clock” so to speak. So how does a mom stay sane and run her home and business successfully without losing her mind or sanity? It’s all about time management and efficient daily planning.

There is one tool to making your home based business and home run smoothly and that is the use of a day planner. Use your day planner to run not only your business, but your house as well. Use it for everything including meal planning, grocery shopping, doctor appointments, goal planning and your every day kid’s schedules, such as soccer games, PTA and such.

While it may be a hot new trend to use a PDA or blackberry to manage your day, I highly recommend the use a paper based day planner in conjunction with an electronic day planner or PDA. With a paper based planner you can easily jot down notes, add a to-do item on your list, clip coupons and attach to your grocery list, and see the overall picture of your day or week at a glance.

One planner that I use exclusively is the Franklin Covey planning system. It is the best planner I have ever used and I have tried many different day planners to best suit my life. I highly suggest networking with other WAHM’s to find out what works best for them. It is best to meet face to face with other WAHM’s, this gives you the chance to pitch your business to other women business owners and also it gives you a chance to get out of the house and socialize while still being productive. A good start at finding local networking groups is using a site such as http://www.meetup.com/; here you can search by topic and location to find the networking group that best fits your needs. Be sure to have some flyers and business cards on hand when you go to any networking event.

If you find it difficult to find the time to network outside the home there are many great networking boards that you can glean information from that are specifically for work at home moms. You can search web sites such as About.com, wahm.com, clubenetwork.com and womenentrepreneur.com to find message boards that will help you network with other WAHM’s. If you are a minority owned business then MBnet.com is a great starting ground.

Being a WAHM is extremely rewarding and challenging but when you have the right tools and resources it all can run smoothly!

Taking the BIG leap to working at home

When I first started freelancing in 1992 I took one big giant leap of faith and started my business with no money, no job and no security net. But back then I didn’t have the responsibilities I do now, such as my son and my rent was not $1400 a month. I don’t recommend doing that now to anyone because very few people actually can make it work like that. On the other hand many people in today’s workplace are forced into finding income at home. With the massive downsizing of companies and automation of many jobs that once were held by humans and not to mention many US jobs being replaced by overseas companies who can work much cheaper than hiring an employee in the United States, many people are losing their jobs with little or no notice these days and many are forced into working at home which can be a blessing in disguise because I am 100% positive that a JOB offers little or no security in today’s job market.

Luckily today many people who lose their jobs have all they really need to operate a business at home. If you are reading this article online you more than likely have all you need to start a business. Even if you do not own a computer many public libraries offer use of a computer free of charge but are subject to time limits. You can now even purchase a desk top computer for as little as $399.

If you feel that your current JOB is in jeopardy there are some things that you need to do right now to prepare to work at home:

1. Research and read all you can about working at home in general. Read about what an average workday is like for the typical home business person. You may be surprised that it involves for hours and days than your current job, but people who are trying to make themselves successful don’t mind working hard for themselves.

2. Discover what you really love in life and try and make a business out of it. Try and find self assessment tests online and see what areas are your strengths and weaknesses. This may lead to an inspiration to start a home based business.

3. Start putting some money aside now and gather some things you will need to run whatever business you will want to start.

4. Subscribe to some small business magazines such as Entrepreneur, Inc., Small Business Opportunities and subscribe to ezines online that are often FREE. I also recommend reading the Wall Street Journal. I read it every day and it is a valuable resource. I also read USA Today.

5. Subscribe to your favorite work at home websites (such as ours) via RSS feeds. Most all blogs and even some websites now offer RSS feeds that you can subscribe to in your web browser.

These are just a few things to get you ready to work at home. There are many other things that you need to get ready for such as planning for child care etc that I will discuss in my next article.

Keeping the motivation alive when working for yourself

I think he most difficult part of running a home based business is keeping the motivation to work alive. Working at home has a lot of benefits but there are also a lot of distractions and temptations we face working at home.

Some people think that working at home means you can get up later in the day and work whenever you want. While this technically may be true, it can lead you to the welfare line faster than if you had a J.O.B. (Just over broke job).

One way to keep the motivation alive and you focused on your new job which is finding legitimate ways to make money at home, is to keep a day planner. Some people can use just a legal pad to jot their schedules down on, personally I need a planner and I only use Franklin Covey planners at this time only because I haven’t found a planner that offers as much time management and organization support as Franklin Covey does. A lot of Smart Phones now have built in planners that can help keep you on track. I personally use a combination of the paper and electronic planning systems.

In your planner write down everything from the time you will wake up to the time you will go to bed, literally! More than likely you will be working harder and longer for yourself than you did at any job you have had in the past! I personally start my day at 6AM and am even considering moving my start of the day to 5:30 just so that at the end of the day I can retire earlier and spend more time with my son.

Don’t make your Day Planner all about business. Include rewards to yourself also and even more importantly include time out for relaxation in your day. Even if the relaxation is only 15 minutes a day, it is very important to schedule “quiet time” every day. Remember the old saying, All work makes jack a dull boy, it’s true and it a sure fast lane for exhaustion to set in. When you are physically and/or mentally exhausted it opens up cans of worms for other problems to happen such as loss of income, depression, anxiety and even more that I will not list here.

Take some time to plan every day and you will be self motivated when you show the fruits of your labor paying off!

New and fun tech toys!

There are many new types of Input / output devices that make computing fun and easy. I am a web developer by trade and I do a lot of graphic design work. One item that I would love to have but have not gotten yet is a Graphic Tablet. The one in particular that I am looking at now after I had the chance to do a little more research on it is the Genius - G-Pen 560 - 6" x 4.5" USB Graphic Tablet.

The current price this device sells for is $39.99. This allows you to create original designs and is a good fit for a professional or just someone who like to doodle on their computer. What made me interested in this product was I love to freehand draw in my paint program when I was bored and later started drawing on sketch pads but then my design did not look as good by just scanning them. That is when I found out about the graphic tablets. The Genius G-pen 560 is both compatible on Mac and PC’s which is good because a lot of die hard graphic designers are die hard Mac fans and swear that a Mac is the only PC a graphic artist should use, which I disagree. While drawing with the digital pen, you can control all kinds of shapes and thickness easily. You can also program the G-Pen 560's two buttons to act as left and right mouse buttons. One really great thing about this tablet is that you can sign documents and email them instead of printing and faxing. This saves natural resources and money by being able to handle documents electronically.

I think other people in the IT field could benefit from using this tablet because it has a lot of uses besides just freehand drawing. Since most IT students are tech junkies they would love to be able to play with a new “Tech Toy”.

Information Technology jobs are hot right now! Some example of these jobs could include web design, programming, web development, network security, and webmasters. The job that interests me the most would be web developer.

Web developers not only designs web sites but uses many different programming languages such as Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby, VBScript, Jscript and various compiled languages such as Java, C, C++, C#, and VB.net. Database management is also in high demand and web developers utilize Rational Database Management Systems like MYSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and XML. Web developers are the gate keepers of the Internet. They are to adhere to standards set by the W3C when creating any programming for the web.

I found many jobs on Dice.com for web developers and the average salary is $45-$55 per hour. Many of these jobs are contract jobs that offer telecommuting positions. Most of the web development jobs require you to work on Internet and Intranet projects. Most all of the jobs require SharePoint experience.

I had a chance to listen to an audio seminar at our local library here and some of the things that I learned by listening to the audio interviews are Networking careers and computer systems administration are the top jobs in Networking. They interact a lot with telecommunication specialists. They also may plan and coordinate Network security. Web and Multimedia can expect to work in web development. The job consists of consulting with clients about needs and wants out of websites, producing beta pages and testing of projects. The biggest certification needed for this job is the CIW certification. There are many different certifications that can help secure positions but are only good if combined with a degree. The job outlook 10 years ago was low due to job saturation but emphasis is now on database development. Start now building a web portfolio especially if you are a Flash developer.

Make money by being a Freelance Writer

Ever since I was in 1st grade I always remember looking for paper and pencils to either doodle on or write stories. I always had something in my head that just had to be written down. Even to this day, I write all day long.

Back in 1996 while I was pregnant with my son Kenneth, I desperately wanted to find a way to be able to stay at home with my son. I wanted to be there for every cool baby stage! I casually looked for some part time jobs and after a long search and almost $3000 wasted on scams I decided to do what I loved which was writing!

Almost every day I was at the library looking at the reference books for writers, such as The Writers Guide, (all freelance writers bible!) and other books for writers. I spent endless hours writing and researching and then submitting articles to various print and online media. I had enough rejection letters I could have wallpapered my 3 bedroom house, but I was not going to let that stop me! After several months I was finally published! I was so excited I read that letter over a million times!

Over the years I have found that it is much harder to be published in print media, than it is to be published online. Neither print media nor online writing is easy. Both require just as much work and determination, but with the new blogging revolution emerging to all new heights, anyone can become a writer in a matter of minutes! Now with many affiliate programs out on the Internet, blogging can make your freelance writing career profitable! Blogging and affiliate marketing has become all writers new best friend.

Making money via Blogging or adsense? Which is better?

For years now the big buzz on making easy money was to add Google adsense to your blogs and websites to make money. Now a hot new trend in income opportunities is blogging for money. For example, let’s say you use PayPerPost to write small articles for other websites. Let’s say you write 3 small articles of at least 100 words every day for one blog. Lets say you get paid the lowest amount per article which is $5 (most average $7-10 unless you have a high page rank in Google) That would give you $15 a day for a blog that has no page rank which means you will be paid a lower rate until your blog gets a higher Page rank. Remember these are a LOW estimate. So blogging for 30 days you would earn $450 a month income if you stick with it and blog every day.

Now for this to work you can’t just have a blog that you write articles to get paid for, you have to have your own ORIGINAL content in between paid blog postings. So that means you have to write and love to write in order to keep your readers coming back for more. For new blogs it’s almost impossible to make this much money when you first start out with Google Adsense.

PayPerPost is my absolute favorite! Right now I only use these people to make money blogging but I am exploring other ways to blog and make money. You can also review my blog and get paid $7.50 just to review Work@Home Parents.

Importance of daily planning when working at home!

There is one key factor that will determine how successful you will be in your home based business. That is how well you can plan your day out in advance. Daily planning is vital to help keep you focused on what needs to be accomplished every day!

How many times have you sat at your desk thinking about what needs to be done and then you have a really good idea to jump start your business or you just rememered somthing you had to do today before the end of the day, then a call comes in from a friend or your kids beg you to make them something to eat, etc. Then you forget what it was you needed to do and it never gets done.

Personally I rely on inspired action to create my success. I carry a day planner everywhere I go. I am not exaggerating! If I go to the grocery store I have my daily planner with how much I can spend, my coupons, sale items and a list. I NEVER walk into the grocery store without a list! It can be very dangerous to your budget!

At night before you go to bed and when you have 20-30 minutes of quiet time where you can sit and think about your day and about the next day that is the best time to plan out your day. Make a to-do list the night before. When you wake up you will have most of what you need to do on your list already. Its hard to plan 100% of your day always, but you can become better focused and can accomplish a lot more in less time if you take the time to create a daily to do list. I call it my POA (Plan of Attack).

Franklin Covey makes the best day planners out there and that is the only system I use. I have spent $100's of dollars on different planners and found that the Franklin Covey planning system is the best. You can even use their desktop software and synch your blackberry or PDA to your daily planner. I personally use both the paper and the electronic version. I use the paper one more but both have options that help me manage my day.

I am back! Old domain got hijacked

Well we are back and thank God I started work At Home Parents on Blogger because I was able to recover most of my links and content since our domain theworkathomeparents.com was jacked. I am working on a new domain now and new page design but will publish on both blogger and my domain so this never happens again!

I have some really new links for ways to make some money from home and will spend the day trying to recover some of those links so that I can get them on here. I had lots of comments on how my links have helped people earn some money by working at home.

Productivity tips for Freelancers

Being a freelancer is a very rewarding experience. Freelancing allows you to pick and choose your own projects and fees, something you often can't do as a telecommuter or employee, but sometimes we tend to hit the snooze button a few more times or surf the web while becoming distracted by unproductive sites. Every freelancer has been hit with these and other stumbling blocks at least once, often times more than once. These stumbling blocks can eventually lead to economic hardship and or unproductive work habits.

One way to avoid stumbling blocks is to plan out your day the night before. Use productivity software and tools such as Franklin Covey planning software and devices such as Palm Pilots and phones like the Blackberry. Plan out your day on paper and then enter all that needs to be done into your productivity software or device.

Using planning software can be very useful especially now that many have "Spring Fever". It makes it hard to get in any billable hours in when the sun is shining and birds are chirping. As a freelancer we don't have an angry boss telling us when to come back from lunch......

New job links for the Summer months

Since January I have had the opportunity to do a lot of research regarding companies that hire home based workers. I have spent hours researching these companies and interviewing management at several companies that hire home based workers.

One common thread that I found with these companies is many of them have an all or nothing policy and the pay is not that great, unless you are into the IT or programming aspect of work at home jobs. Most customer service jobs pay about $9 an hour. That is an OK income if you have a 2 family income but if you are a single mom it is hard to make a living on it.

One company that I interviewed for, rang my phone one time and then minutes later sent me an email saying that I did not meet the minimum qualifications to work for them. This was after being stood up for my initial interview because of "system problems" Perhaps this company does not meet my minimum qualifications for a company I want to work for!

I will be upgrading my work at home companies list and then rating them as I research them. I will be also deleting them as I find companies that are not worth the time. Anyone that has a link to share please feel free to leave a comment here.

Now that summer vacation starts this month, I am more so now looking for even more companies to add to my blog! I do have to warn my readers in advance, if you work for a call center more than likely the company that you work for will have a zero tolerance for back ground noise. That means if children, dogs, door bells, phones are heard in the back ground some companies will give you a final warning and some may terminate your employment on the spot.

Well I have been telecommuting for the past three months now for a company. I decided to post my views on official telecommuting as compared to freelancing. There are lots of pros and cons to both sides. See my list that may be updated as I continue to both telecommute and freelance. Today I will discuss just a few of the many pro's of telecommuting!

PRO's of Telecommuting

In most cases you will have a steady income, depending on the company of course.
Many telecommuters are hired as employees and have benefits as the traditional employee.
No commuting! With increasing gas prices this is a HUGE plus!
Spend more time with your family. although you will not be able (in most cases) to stop work to play with the kids, you will have more time that you are home. The average worker commutes 2 hours per day. Imagine spending an extra 2 hours a day with your family.
Parents of older children are able to homeschool their kids. Most kids 10+ years old in many cases can complete homeschool activities via web based schools with aid of virtual teachers. With the increasing school violence (Virginia Tech is a prime example) more parents are opting to homeschool their kids.
Telecommuting is safer! Most commuters are in a mad rush to quickly get to their office in time. Every day there are 1000's of commuting related traffic accidents in the United States alone. Telecommuting reduces the number of vehicles on already crowded streets and highways thus making roads a tad safer.
Telecommuting reduces stress! In my job we have a 7 minute commute. That is how long it takes to log into my company's system and get ready to start my shift. No stress of a commute, office politics, and other family stresses related to work.
Save money telecommuting. You an save money on wardrobe expenses and lunch by working at home, not to mention saving money on gasoline. There are many ways a person can save money by working at home.
Relocate to where you want to live! Many telecommuters have employers who are in different states. This allows employees to relocate to a place they want to live.
More job opportunities for handicapped individuals. Telecommuting allows people with disabilities a way to make a living from the comfort of their homes. This is a huge plus for people who are unable to leave their homes to work.

Here are just a few of the many benefits to telecommuting! Telecommuting is not for everyone, hopefully my site will allow you to make a educated decision if telecommuting is right for you! Please watch for the 2cd part of this article.

Wow I have to say that I LOVE working at my new job! I love the training, I am learning so much new stuff its uplifting! I love a challenge and gladly accepted this challenge! Today I found out that they are offering an awesome medical insurance plan that is really quite affordable. Since my son is already covered by military insurance I just have to pay for mine and let me tell you, just being able to save on meds is a HUGE plus!

I have waited years to find a company that I could work for as an employee (Not as a IC) that offered benefits! I feel totally blessed to have this opportunity. Someone actually got terminated today during training for missing a day of training without calling in. I like the zero tolerance policy and they are very fair, you just have to know what is required of you.

My daily commute takes me about 7 minutes. That includes time to brew a cup of coffee. Relocate my animals to another part of the house, log into my work, jump on the phone bridge and work with 2 minutes to spare. I listen to the traffic radio on the way to bringing my son to school and remember the days when it took me 1 hour to drive 15 miles up the road to work. Tampa is a nightmare commuting.

I have posted some great companies on this site that you can telecommute with also. Apply with the companies that will fit you the best. Then be patient and persistent. There is no reason that you can not find employment from home.

Changing schedules when working at home

Recently I put my son back in public school due to a new job I have working with Alpine Access. Since they have a zero tolerance for background noise while working and due to the fact it would be harder to homeschool effectively while working I put him in school. So my schedule has shifted to match my sons schedule which I guess is best as before I would work all hours of the day and night and sometimes sleep in until 9 or 10 if I was up late the night before.

The first day Kenny was back in school I had high energy, I was pumped, busy as heck running here and there getting everything set for him entering school. I had high goals of what I was gonna accomplish every day, less mess to clean because Kenny will be gone most the day due to school and after school programs. I made my to do list, entered all my new dates and schedules into my Franklin Covey planner and off I went to work my current 2 part time jobs and did some minor work on my own consulting business. and then.............

DAY 2

6:00 AM - hit snooze button until 6:30. Lay in bed another 5 minutes staring at ceiling. Tell Kenny to wake up. Take shower. Tell Kenny to wake up. Get dressed, put on makeup. Tell Kenny to get up. Start coffee maker Tell Kenny to get up. Take dog out. Tell Kenny to get up.

7:00 AM - throw clothes at Kenny tell him to wake up. He tells me to leave so he can get dressed, promises he won't fall asleep. I leave, download email, boot up planner software, quickly review day.

7:15 AM Kenny back a sleep. Me Frustrated. Threaten to strip his world (No i-pod, tv, games NOTHING) Kenny wakes up tells me to leave so he can get dressed. Me - standing guard while he gets dressed. Send him to brush his teeth and wash up. Feed animals, stop dog/cat fight over food. Kenny back in bed.

7:27 AM Tell Kenny he will be late for school - he FINALLY gets up and out the door.

7:31 AM. We arrive at school. Breakfast starts at 7:30 AM

The rest of the day this is me:

The US Army has a manual I found while searching with someone on ChaCha called "Asleep at the Throttle" it talks about how to combat fatigue as a pilot. This is my favorite quote that I have always followed since as far back as I can remember: "Consume caffeine immediately before and/or during the flight". Flight in this case could mean work.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I am beginning to love ChaCha even more! Today ChaCha is pretty busy. I made pizza dinner money in a little more than an hour and its 9:30 AM so I think I did good! After my experiment last weekend with making my sons tuition money on ChaCha I had several people want to be guides. I only have 2 spots left so you need to explain why you want to be a ChaCha guide. You also should have experience searching the web for any topic. If you use Google or any other search engine you can use ChaCha and make money.

I am finding the best times to log on to ChaCha is in the morning or in the late evenings. I think on the weekends you will find a lot of guides online and although you can make money, you won't get as many searches. This is just what I have found through my own trial and error.

I am sorry for being a day late on posting my results of my ChaCha $60 experiment. The final results were $64.33 I made it on time to make my sons After School tuition payment. It is true that ChaCha may not be the best paying job at this time but they pay you INSTANTLY so if you need money for anything you can hop on ChaCha and work a bit and get paid when you want.

I still have 2 ChaCha guide invites for anyone who wants them.

My experiment to make $60 on ChaCha by Monday

As many of you know I am a ChaCha Pro guide. I have an experiment that I am working on now. That is I am trying to make $60 by Working this Saturday and Sunday in hopes ChaCha will provide me with enough money to pay my sons after school program Monday when I drop him off.

So far I have made $32 since Friday so I am hopeful that between the paid training request that I provide and the searches I will be able to meet my goal. I will be adding to this post and updating as I go along so please check back for updates.

Sunday AM 1:24 AM - It is technically Sunday now. It is really slow today on chacha which is making it hard to reach my goal, but I am determined to give it some time and see how it goes. I have made more money than $60 since I joined chacha but I always just searched when I had free time just to make a few bucks. While I wait for searches I am adding to my blogs and doing some web site promotion. I am anxious to see with a conscious effort if I can reach my goal! I should mention that I have done 274 searches since joining ChaCha on 12/11/06. Since I can withdraw funds daily if I want to I get paid daily. I am going to try and put in at least 4-6 hours a day working with chahca since I do have another job working with Alpine Access.

Sunday 2:39 AM - I am getting tired but am seeing how long I can stay up searching. I may make a cup of coffee. Just ate some nachos lol trying to put my best foot forward. The searches are starting to pick up now so that is good. So far I am up to $38.79. Slowly getting there. I think I am gonna brew that coffee now. LOL

Sunday 3:29 AM - Thank God I had a nap earlier because now I am getting tired. Coffee didn't help any :( I am up to $41.32 now and I up to 280 searches. I am wondering if I should go to bed or stick it out some more. It's nice working when it's quiet but I am tired. Well just got a training request so I guess I am up. Might as well work when its busy.

Sunday 12 Noon - Well I am back at my desk with breakfast/lunch in front of me seeing if I can still reach my goal. I am at $41.26 and 282 searches. It seems busier than last night so lets see how well I do.

Sunday 1:50 PM - It is a slow day on ChaCha and I had some training requests to do which I don't get paid for but will help me promote on some new keywords. I took a 30 minute break to get my son some school supplies. So at this time I am at $45.16 and 285 searches. At 2PM I am taking a break to do laundry. We are getting closer folks!

Monday 10:13 AM - I have until 2:30 PM to come up with $60. I am getting close. I started out at $46.41 this morning. I am confident I will make it.
